Bursaries and Scholarships

Northern Alberta Rural Physicians Fund

The purpose of the fund will be to support funding for educational needs related to medical students accepted or enrolled in a Canadian Medical School and who intend to pursue their career in rural northern Alberta, specifically the geographical region on, about or north of latitude 54 and within the province of Alberta.

Granting consideration will be given to students whose educational training may include family medicine, general internal medicine, general surgery, general pediatric, general anesthesia and general psychiatry.  Each year a scholarship may be awarded to one or  more applicants totaling $10,000.

The Board seeks individuals who must meet the following criteria:

The applicant must:

  •   Fulfill an identified health care occupational need as outlined above
  •   Be prepared to sign a one year return for service agreement upon completion of the program
  •   Be able to show financial need by providing a budget (form available with the application)
  •   Have attended a high school in a community located on, about or north of latitude 54 and within the  province of Alberta.

Dr. Phil & Vi Sunohara Nursing Bursary

The Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation Board will be awarding the Dr. Phil & Vi Sunohara Surgical Nursing Fund Bursary.  The Board will award these bursaries to nurses engaged in, or wanting to engage in the field of orthopaedic nursing that will benefit the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, other health care institutions and/or health care programs in North Western Alberta. Priority will be given to nurses identified in orthopaedic surgical nursing fields that will benefit the hospitals and health care providers within the region. The Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation Board reserves the right to award as many or as few bursaries, based on the criteria and number of submissions.

Criteria

The Board seeks individuals who must meet the following criteria:
  •   fulfill an identified health care occupational need in north western Alberta
  •   have experience or education in the health care field
  •   have completed a minimum of one year of study in an accredited college or university
  •   demonstrate commitment and dedication to his/her work/education
  •   be a high performer
  •   show growth potential in his/her chosen profession
  •   provide a detailed budget to identify financial need (form available with the application)
  •   be prepared to sign a return for service agreement with Alberta Health Services for one year, (if the region does not have a need for the applicant upon completion of their program, the return for service agreement may be waived)

Sarah Joan Alward Bursary

The Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation Board will be awarding the Sarah Joan Alward Bursary. Bursaries range from $1,000 - $2,500 depending on each application. The Foundation Board reserves the right to award as many or as few bursaries, based on the criteria and number of submissions. The Board will award these Bursaries to people engaged in fields of study that benefit the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, other Health Care Institutions, and/or Health Care Programs in North Western Alberta. Priority will be given to individuals identified in health care occupations that will benefit the Hospitals and Health Care providers within the Region.

Dr. Philip Sunohara Memorial Surgical Scholarship

The Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation will be awarding scholarships up to $15,000 to assist physicians in their pursuit of surgical specialist education and training.

The committee will award these scholarships to physicians engaged in a specialist field, who upon completion of their training will practice within Alberta Health Services.

Applications will be prioritized based on the following field of study:

  1. Orthopaedics and orthopaedic sub specialties,
  2. General Surgery,
  3. Other surgical fields in the areas listed below will be prioritized based on the region’s identified specialist need. These areas include but not limited to:
    1.  Urology
    2. Ophthalmology
    3. Gynaecology
    4. Plastics
    5. Ear, Nose and Throat
  4. General Practitioner Surgery
  5. Anesthesia
  6. General Practitioner Anesthesia

Criteria:

  •   Fulfill an identified need within Alberta Health Services;
  •   Be prepared to sign a return for service agreement with Alberta Health Services for one year,
    • if the region does not have a need for the applicant upon completion of their program, the return for service agreement may be waived;
  •   Demonstrate commitment and dedication to his/her work and education;
  •   Be a high performer;
  •   Show growth potential in the chosen specialty;
  •   Provide a detailed budget to identify financial need;
